Floor Design

This Victorian Floor Design was specially commissioned by architects at the Department of the Environment who were looking to replicate the old Victorian floor design in Stormont Castle which had become damaged beyond repair.

The Northern Ireland Department of the Environment contacted us after seeing a copy of our Cathedral range brochure, which shows our range of Victorian style flooring. They had been looking for a local company who would be able to replace the badly damaged floor at Stormont Castle. Within the tender that the DOE had been given for this, and indeed for all projects of this nature, was the stipulation that if possible, the products must be sourced locally.

Stormont Castle is an old family residence that was extensively renovated and extended in approximately 1858. The original floor dates back to this time. The original tiles shown above are encaustic ie formed by the pouring of liquid clay into complex moulds. This is a process which is now almost non-existent and because of this, the DOE contractors were experiencing great difficulty in sourcing a company to carry out the required work.

Armatile offered a contemporary solution in the form of a replica floor cut from porcelain by our waterjet technology.

The floor was manufactured and fitted and this led the way to a repeat order for the Stormont Glass House.
